Home-made laundry detergent

Laundry detergent often consists of chemicals and it’s not really cheap. It’s possible to make natural laundry detergent at home with hardly any effort. This saves money and also protects the environment and health. It takes only 3 to 4 ingredients. I did a little photo series on how to do it.

LAUNDRY DETERGENT INGREDIENTS

75 g / 2.65 oz washing soda
75 g / 2.65 oz  baking soda
50 g / 1.76 oz curd soap
some drops of essential oil (e. g. lemon grass or lavender)*

INSTRUCTIONS

Grate the curd soap with a grater.

The soap should be grated as fine as possible so it blends well later.

Optional: some drops of essential oil

If desired, add a few drops of essential oil to the grated soap and mix well to avoid lumps. If you prefer unscented detergent skip this step.

Now add baking soda and washing soda.

Mix all ingredients

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly. When the soap is fine enough a spoon is sufficient to mix. Otherwise everything can be placed in a blender to generate a powder of equal consistency.

The result is a fine white powder which can be best kept in a jar with a screw-cap or clip-lock.

USAGE

Use 1-2 tablespoons per load of laundry (2 for large or soiled loads).

This detergent is not suitable for animal fibres, such as silk or wool, as the contained washing soda swells up these fibres.

*The quantity is enough for a small amount of laundry detergent (approx. 15-20 loads). So it’s good for testing. Just multiply the ingredients accordingly if you want to produce a bigger amount.
